Kamchatka is a peninsula situated on the northeast of Russia. It covers the area of 472, 300 square kilometers which is equal to the size of several European countries. It lies between the Sea of Ohotsk on the west, the Bering Sea in the northeast and the Pacific Ocean on the east. The indigenous people were the first inhabitants of Kamchatka. Now there are about 15 000 Itelmen (Kamchadals), Koryaki, Chukchi and Even living in Kamchatka who still live off reindeer herding and preserve their old lifestyle. Until 1991 Kamchatka was a closed area, not only for foreigners but for Russians as well, due to its being a military region.
Many scientists who have worked on Kamchatka research agree that this Peninsula is a unique ecological museum under the open sky, created as a Gift to Humanity. There are about 160 volcanoes, 29 of which are active. One of them, Kluchevskaya Sopka, is the highest volcano in Asia (4750 m). On the mountainous ridges there are about 414 glaciers covering 871,1 sq.km. Kamchatka is home to five parks and reserves which are on the United Nations' heritage list.
One third of Kamchatka Peninsula is covered with forests, and the rest consists of lakes (about 100, 000) and rivers (about 14, 100). The water in many lakes and rivers is transparent which is good for spawning. Kamchatka is the largest cradle of salmon in the world. The coastal waters of the peninsula are incredibly rich with cod, halibut, herring, flounder, perch and rock trout plus eight types of crab, and six types of shrimp, mollusks, and sea cucumbers. The animal world of Kamchatka is very diverse: giant brown bear, fox, polar fox, sable, mink, lynx, hare, otter and others. Animals, birds and plants here are as if they were a part of earlier time. Nature lovers will be charmed by the amazing sea animal colonies, bird rookeries and of course, Kamchatka brown bears, the biggest in the world.
Volcanoes and volcanic activity, underground heat, cyclones and maritime influence created Kamchatka's climate which is milder than in other areas of the Russian Far East. There are more than twenty climatic zones in Kamchatka. Weather changes are very typical for Kamchatka. Average summer temperatures are + 14C and winter temperatures are -11C. Winters are long (8 months), snowy with many blizzards.
